Cabrillo National Monument

The history of the San Diego area is a long and rich one dating all the way back to the 16th century when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo became the first European to step foot on the land that today is known as San Diego. The Cabrillo National Monument pays homage to the bravery of this explorer, standing guard at the spot it is suspected he first landed, and the statue is a popular tourist attraction. Our guide to what makes the Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego special will ensure that a visit is added to your itinerary!

Located at Point Loma Ecological Reserve, Open Daily From 9AM to 5PM

Built of sandstone and weighing in at a hefty 1400 pounds the Cabrillo National Monument, constructed in 1949 has proudly reigned over the seas he once traveled. Guests can learn all about his history at the visitor’s center that is located nearby, hike along the Cabrillo Coastal Trail, taking in stunning views and getting a little exercise as they do, or explore the historic charms of the Point Loma Lighthouse, all of which are a part of the Cabrillo National Monument Park. Known as the Old Point Loma Lighthouse (yes, a new Point Loma Lighthouse is in existence as well), it is no longer a working lighthouse, but serves a new purpose, that of a museum that offers insight into the history of San Diego and its lighthouses, making it a fascinating part of your monument visit.
