The Del Mar Racetrack has ties to Hollywood history and a link to one of the greatest thoroughbreds in racing history. July 3rd, 1937 was opening day for the Del Mar Racetrack, coming about after one of our La Jolla residents, William A. Quigley, thought it would be a fabulous idea to start one in Del Mar and brought the idea to the attention of world famous crooner, Bing Crosby, who ran with the idea. The slogan, Where Turf Meets Surf, became a song written and performed by Bing, telling the track’s story and convincing all that heard it that luck and happiness could be found at the other end of the starting pistol. Today, Bing’s memory and contribution lives on, with a hall dedicated in his name and in the continued success of a track that is also known to be where the renowned thoroughbred, Sea Biscuit, raced and won.
Race Season
The races are not a year-round event, so if you are planning a visit to the San Diego area at any other time than mid-July through early-September, you may want to change the dates of your travels or start planning a new visit. The question has been asked, “Can you really consider you were in San Diego if you didn’t place a bet at Del Mar Racetrack?” and even as there are many other wonderful adventures you can enjoy during your stay, we do agree that watching the races is an iconic California experience that should not be missed.
